Chapter 26
"You're such a fool. I can't believe how stupid you are!" Miranda screamed at him.
His head thumped, he was tired, and he wasn't interested in listening to her crap. "You have a safe trip."
"Asshole."
He pulled her suitcase onto the porch and handed it to the Uber driver. Her mouth was still going, but he couldn't care less what was coming out. He just wanted her gone. Gone, gone, gone.
Miranda changed tactics. She burst into tears. "You know it's only because I still love you. Natey, please."
He hated that nickname with the burning passion of a thousand burning Qaax suns.
"Baby, please. I miss you so much. Please come home." She grabbed for his hands, and he stuffed them deep into his pockets.
"I am home." He sighed. "Was that everything?"
She sniffled.
Rolling his eyes, he told the Uber driver to wait. He had a sneaking suspicion she'd left something behind just to have an excuse to come back. He was correct. Her purse sat on the far kitchen counter, hidden by the refrigerator.
He carried it out and, ignoring her pouting, handed it to her and opened the car door. "Bye." He shut the door and walked around to the driver's side. Handing the driver some cash, he said, "Here's a little extra to make sure she gets to the airport on time. I don't care what she says, do not bring her back here."
The driver counted the money and shoved it in his pocket. "You got it."
Nate felt bad for what this driver was about to endure and handed him another twenty. "I mean it. Lose this address."
"You're such an asshole!" Miranda screeched from the passenger seat as the driver winced.
Nate turned and walked toward the house, not taking a decent breath until the car was out of sight. Good riddance.
A long, hot shower and a fresh shave later, Nate went over in his mind a hundred times what he was going to say to Kim. And a hundred times, it sounded like crap. He had no idea what he was going to say that could possibly convince her he hadn't slept with Miranda. Especially since bringing it up at all seemed to sound an awful lot like guilt talking.
He put on his shoes and decided it was time to man up, walk across the yard, and knock on her door. Instead, he vacuumed the living room, put the comforter in the dryer, started a load of laundry, and checked his email.
It was nearly eleven when he decided that a food offering was in order. He left the house, but instead of going next door, he got in the car and drove to a sub shop. Standing in line, he stared at the menu. This was a stupid idea. He didn't know what Kim would want, let alone Jared.
"Can I help you?" A teenage boy pulled on a pair of plastic gloves.
"I don't think anybody can," he muttered.
"Excuse me?"
He looked up and forced a smile. "Sorry. Yeah. Three turkey subs, please. No. Wait.
